About Chlorine Allergy
Can You Be Allergic To Chlorine?
Chlorine is not an allergenic substance, and it is not possible to have a chlorine allergy. Rather, you may have a chlorine sensitivity, or you may actually be experiencing a different allergic or respiratory condition. In some individuals, exposure to chlorine in swimming pools or cleaning products can cause skin, respiratory, or nasal reactions that are similar to allergy symptoms.
Chlorine is an irritant. In high concentrations, it can ‘burn’ the skin (like a chemical burn) in the way that more potent chemicals can. Chlorine also dries the skin, which can irritate any existing skin conditions. In addition to these effects, asthma, exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, and bronchospasm are known to worsen when chlorine is inhaled. In fact, research suggests that frequent exposure to chlorine may increase the risk of developing asthma and other respiratory allergies.

Chlorine Allergy Symptoms
Skin reactions can consist of skin redness, tenderness, inflammation, and/or itchiness at the site of contact. Rashes or hives may also develop.
Respiratory symptoms of chlorine sensitivity can include coughing, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, or wheezing. These symptoms are more common in individuals with asthma, allergic rhinitis, and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.
Nasal symptoms can consist of runny nose, itchy nose, sneezing, or congestion; but these symptoms can also be caused by seasonal allergies.
Chlorine Allergy Diagnosis
Even though it is not possible to have a chlorine allergy, it is generally advised to visit an allergist if you’re experiencing any allergy-like symptoms, especially if your symptoms are preventing you from partaking in regular activities. Depending on your medical history, your allergist may test you for allergies, asthma, or other immunologic conditions.

Chlorine Allergy Treatment
If you’re experiencing a skin reaction to chlorine, try washing the affected area with clean water to remove any chlorine on the skin. If your reaction persists, an allergist may prescribe you a corticosteroid cream or an antihistamine as a treatment.
